Brilliant! I just adore Phryne

Have read most of these before in 'A Question of Death'。 Apparently some have been re-written/tightened up。 The stories are - 1。 Hotel Splendide, where Phryne is staying in Paris, and the female half of a honeymooning Australian couple reappears, and claims the hotel has stolen her husband。 And they have。 2。 The Voice is Jacob's Voice。 At one of Phryne's 'pay back' parties, two brothers almost come to blows。 Both need to remain sober until inheritance, and their Trustee, Mr Crabbe, is there to w Have read most of these before in 'A Question of Death'。 Apparently some have been re-written/tightened up。 The stories are - 1。 Hotel Splendide, where Phryne is staying in Paris, and the female half of a honeymooning Australian couple reappears, and claims the hotel has stolen her husband。 And they have。 2。 The Voice is Jacob's Voice。 At one of Phryne's 'pay back' parties, two brothers almost come to blows。 Both need to remain sober until inheritance, and their Trustee, Mr Crabbe, is there to watch。 Not sure the outcome, as far as the remaining family members are concerned, is sufficient。 3。 Marrying the Bookie's Daughter - In which Lindsay Herbert proposes to Phryne, and when the female assistant Chloe Smith has important information about the forthcoming marriage of the son of the Fletcher house。 4。 The Vanishing of Jock McHale's Hat - where Archbishop Mannix comes to owe Phryne a favour, after she quickly determines who has stolen a man's hat while he sits in church。 5。 Puttin' on the Ritz - William Barlow, a lawyer who works with Jilly, needs his mothers pearls to pay for a fund to help people who can't afford lawyers。 But his father has given them to the woman he's dating。 Luckily, there's a legend about Cleopatra and Caesar, and the most expensive drink in the world。 6。 The Body in the Library - five pages - a body found in the library of Robert Sanderson, who is trying to reform prostitution law, turns out to have a link to Reverend Josiah Blackroot。 Mrs Trellis-Smythe。 7。 The Miracle of St Mungo。 When Lucy, Lady Wessex, a sweet young thing has been cheating on her husband, and has had a locket stolen for blackmail by Percy Fellowes, Phryne steps in, invoking a family legend。 St Mungo, patron saint of Glasgow。 8。 Overheard on a Balcony。 The Queenscliff Hotel June 25th 1928 General Alexander Harbottle is not nice to his wife Emmy。 He takes a drink, and keels over。 And the person Phryne initially tags as responsible, isn't。 And no one heard anything on the balcony 9。 The Hours of Juana the Mad。 Phryne is at Melbourne University, and has a treasure quest。 The addition of the sub plot with the student and the exam, improved this story in a later book。 10。 Death shall be Dead Jack Robinson reports to Phryne that someone is trying to kill Albie Jackson, who lives in Austin St Footscray。 Thomas Mason and his wife Mary (whom Phryne helped escape and divorce him) are involved。 Jack Robinson, who has been studying Chaucer, gains a dog, who was originally Anubis, and becomes Blackie。 11。 Carnival Phryne takes Bobby Fergusson to the carnival, and he bleats on about having lost his pearls。 12。 The Camberwell Wonder - A stained collar is found, and a man who doesn't understand the consequences (gardener Stevie Slade) admits to killing Mr Joshua Clarke, who appears to have been a smuggler。 Phryne mentions 'The Camden wonder', where there was no corpse。 13。 Come Sable Night 1928 and Phryne has Madrigal singers at her house。 Lawrence Newhouse-Gore is now engaged to his ex fiance's sister。 He's allergic to bee stings。 But is it murder, after all? 14。 The Boxer (New One) Mrs Florence Ragnell employed Phryne to find her granddaughter。 Phryne meets a match girl, A 6'7" Boxing Bear, and a doctor named Henry James who is a Grammar boy, and told what to do to avoid being hanged。 15。 A Matter of Style (New One) Phryne visits Madame Latour's 'Salon de Paris' in Port Melbourne, where Mrs Ballard is holding forth about her missing jewellery。 16。 The Chocolate Factory (New One) Phryne and Ember are painted for the front of a Dark Lady chocolate box from Charpentier's。 She gives the nougat to Jane and Ruth - and it contains mustard。 17。 The Bells of St Paul's (New One) - Tea at the Windsor allows Phryne to hear that the bells are not ringing as usual。 She determines the message, and arrives to find she is not the only one to have done so - and she meets up with Michael aka Toby, Viscount Windemere, who is in love with the Dean's daughter Rose, eventually Countess of Grasmere。 。。。more

Fun。 Good short stories。 Love Phryne Fisher。

A nice, fun collection of short stories from the world of Miss Phryne Fisher series (I've only audiobooked three from my local library in this order: Murder on the Ballarat Train, Flying Too High & The Green Mill Murder) and while fun, most of these stories have been published before, I think, in A Question of Death: An Illustrated Phryne Fisher Treasury or else where。 But this was a fun collection。 Might not be everyone's cup of tea, but I seem to enjoy "cosy" crimes lately and this fits the bi A nice, fun collection of short stories from the world of Miss Phryne Fisher series (I've only audiobooked three from my local library in this order: Murder on the Ballarat Train, Flying Too High & The Green Mill Murder) and while fun, most of these stories have been published before, I think, in A Question of Death: An Illustrated Phryne Fisher Treasury or else where。 But this was a fun collection。 Might not be everyone's cup of tea, but I seem to enjoy "cosy" crimes lately and this fits the bill。 。。。more

This was my first foray into the book world of the Hon。 Miss Phryne Fisher although I’m a fan of the TV series。It took me a few of the short stories to get into the writing style and the conversation style but I enjoyed how book!Phryne was more no-nonsense and sharp when compared to the screen!Phyrne。I’m not sure the short story format was quite my cup of tea because I found them a bit too short but the plots were all different and they had a menagerie of characters which was fun to read about。 This was my first foray into the book world of the Hon。 Miss Phryne Fisher although I’m a fan of the TV series。It took me a few of the short stories to get into the writing style and the conversation style but I enjoyed how book!Phryne was more no-nonsense and sharp when compared to the screen!Phyrne。I’m not sure the short story format was quite my cup of tea because I found them a bit too short but the plots were all different and they had a menagerie of characters which was fun to read about。 I think I’d like to give the novels a go and see if my ambivalence to the mystery genre might finally get kicked to the curb!I would recommend this to people who have seen the TV series but not read the books so long as they’re willing to willing to read the first few stories to get into the swing of things。 。。。more

What an absolutely delightful series of short stories about the gorgeous Phryne Fisher! Highly recommended read especially if you also love the others books。

Didn’t realise this was a reprint of A Question of Death, with four new stories thrown in as a sweetener, and all the non-story extras removed。 Disappointing and not worth it tbh, although the cover is gorgeous。

An absolute delight from beginning to end。 This little book is so much more than a collection of short stories。 Yes, the stories are vintage Phryne - almost literally as only 4 are new, but who cares? The bonus is the introduction telling us just how Phryne sprung to life and also how Kerry Greenwood sees the screen versus the book versions and why they are different。 My only complaint is how to pause in reading - you finish one story and can't help but dive straight into the next one。 An absolute delight from beginning to end。 This little book is so much more than a collection of short stories。 Yes, the stories are vintage Phryne - almost literally as only 4 are new, but who cares? Fun and entertaining - just what I needed, Greenwood is back with these short stories。 There are 4 new ones, the rest are from a previous collection (updated)。 I really liked the forward - Greenwood sharing her Phyrne writing journey。 Much more enjoyable than her latest long form novel (which I WANTED to love, but it was just too convoluted)。 These are short and sweet and amusing。

I have read all of the Phryne Fisher books but this is the first time I have read any short stories about her。 I enjoyed them very much。 I especially liked Kerry Greenwood's introduction 'On Phryne Fisher' in which she discusses how Phryne and her series began。 She had very definite ideas about how her main character would be。 "I wanted her to be like James Bond with better clothes and fewer gadgets。" She wanted a female detective unlike the norm, one that was "without guilt, with boundless self I have read all of the Phryne Fisher books but this is the first time I have read any short stories about her。 I enjoyed them very much。 I especially liked Kerry Greenwood's introduction 'On Phryne Fisher' in which she discusses how Phryne and her series began。 She had very definite ideas about how her main character would be。 "I wanted her to be like James Bond with better clothes and fewer gadgets。" She wanted a female detective unlike the norm, one that was "without guilt, with boundless self esteem-as a role model perhaps。" She certainly achieved her goals。All of the stories were good though I especially enjoyed Hotel Splendide, Death Shall be Dead, Carnival and The Bells of St。Pauls。 I did wish once or twice that she had extended a story into a full book。 Several of them definitely had the makings for a novel! Since she did not I hope her muse is currently poking her in the middle of the back and growling 'Wake up and write the book。" The Honorable Phryne Fisher has lots of life in her yet。 。。。more

If you are not yet familiar with the Honourable Miss Phryne Fisher, then this collection of short stories is a wonderful introduction to the elegant, sensual, and sassy lady private detective, while established fans will enjoy the opportunity to again accompany the intrepid investigator on her adventures in 1920’s Melbourne, and occasionally further afield。In her introduction to The Lady With the Gun Asks the Questions, tagged ‘The ultimate Miss Phryne Fisher Collection’, Kerry Greenwood shares If you are not yet familiar with the Honourable Miss Phryne Fisher, then this collection of short stories is a wonderful introduction to the elegant, sensual, and sassy lady private detective, while established fans will enjoy the opportunity to again accompany the intrepid investigator on her adventures in 1920’s Melbourne, and occasionally further afield。In her introduction to The Lady With the Gun Asks the Questions, tagged ‘The ultimate Miss Phryne Fisher Collection’, Kerry Greenwood shares a little about how she developed Phryne, and her writing process。 Greenwood also reminds readers that there are several significant differences between the world of the book series and that of the television series - Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries。 That said, anyone familiar with only the show will recognise Phryne’s companions, as well as several settings and scenes。I was a little disappointed to find that of the seventeen short stories offered in The Lady With the Gun Asks the Questions, there are only four new tales, set around the same time as the 21st book in the series, Death in Daylesford, published earlier this year。 The bulk have been published previously in a 2008 collection, A Question of Death, though Greenwood comments that some of these have since been edited to fit better with the chronology of the series。Regardless, whether Phryne is searching for a missing husband, or a hat, outsmarting a blackmailer, or a cheat, or identifying a murderer, I found all of the story’s in The Lady With the Gun Asks the Questions to be engaging。 As always, I love Phryne’s dry observations and quick wit, her disinclination for suffering fools and her bent for natural justice。 Clever, entertaining, and charming, I found The Lady With the Gun Asks the Questions to be a delight to read。 。。。more

Can we get it over with, so that we can devote all of our attention to the food?’ Miss Fisher aims to return some pearls to their rightful owner。The Body in the Library ‘There’s going to be a scandal, you know。’ Miss Fisher helps Detective Inspector Jack Robinson solve a murder。The Miracle of St Mungo ‘I have got into a … difficulty。’ Miss Fisher outsmarts a blackmailer。Overheard on a Balcony ‘Are you going to turn me in, Phryne?’ A Christmas dinner in June is one diner’s final meal。The Hours of Juana the Mad ‘The Book is in the safe。 You see, we look after it well。’ The Book is not in the safe。Death Shall Be Dead ‘So now we’ve got a mystery, and a murderer to find,’ he observed。 ‘Any ideas?’ Miss Fisher helps Detective Inspector Robinson solve a mystery involving fire, death and a loyal dog。Carnival ‘I love carnivals。’ Miss Fisher would have had a more uneventful time at the carnival if she’d been accompanied by a different escort。The Camberwall Wonder He said slowly, ‘I killed Mr Clarke。 I killed him。’ Stevie has confessed to murder but his mother is certain that he couldn’t have done it。Come, Sable Night ‘If I started to get worried about every corpse I saw, I’d be a wreck。’ Miss Fisher’s evening consists of music, gossip and a corpse。The Boxer It was a cold winter’s day in St Kilda, and Mrs Ragnell was wrapped up so tightly in furs and a sense of personal grievance that she resembled a polar bear with a hangover。 Mrs Ragnell hires Miss Fisher to find her missing granddaughter。A Matter of Style The Salon de Paris this Thursday morning was anything but quiet。 The staff of Miss Fisher’s hairdresser are accused of stealing from their customers。The Chocolate Factory ‘Well, girls, what do you think?’ Miss Fisher’s portrait is going to be used on the box of a new assortment of chocolates。The Bells of St Paul’s ‘Miss Phryne, what’s wrong with the bells? They ring them every day。’ There’s a message in the tolling of the bells。This was one of the best kinds of book mail: the unexpected kind。 It was also my introduction to the world that Phryne Fisher inhabits。 I’d previously heard of the Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries TV series but haven’t watched any。 While it’s noted that the author completes extensive research prior to writing each book in the series, I couldn’t have pinpointed the time period that many of these short stories were set in had I not already been told in the author’s introduction。 I expect readers who follow this series will love the opportunity to follow Miss Fisher as she solves these short mysteries, potentially getting to know recurring characters in more depth。Thank you so much to Allen & Unwin for the opportunity to read this book。 I’m rounding up from 3。5 stars。Blog - https://schizanthusnerd。com 。。。more
